[1] The name of Budgam District comes from one of its settlements, which serves as its headquarters. The region was known as SriPratap SinghPoranamed after Dogra ruler Mahraja Pratab Singh, during whose reign it was first established as a tehsil, until the final census was conducted in 1941 during the pre-independence era. Before 1951, the Baramulla district included the Tehsil of Budgam along with other tehsils in the current district. Budgam District, formerly known as District Srinagar, was created as a result of the administrative reorganization of districts in 1979. The district is located roughly 14 kilometers from Srinagar’s main center (Lal Chowk). In addition to the tombs of other notable saints and Sufis of great historical and religious significance, including the shrine of Hazrat Ali Aali Bulkhi (Pakherpora), the tomb of Mir Shams-ud-Din Iraqi (R.A.), the shrine of Gunj Baba Reshi, the shrine of Syed Salleh Khansahib, the tomb of Zia-ud-din Bukhari, the tomb of Syed Taj-u-Din, the tomb of Sham Ded (Poshker), and others, the district holds the distinction of being the resting place of the great spiritual saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali (R.A) at Chari-Sharief. Famous poets, writers, and musicians like Shams Fakher, Shah Gafoor, Samed Mir, and Abdul Ahad Azad, among others, were born in the district. In addition to sites of spiritual significance, the District is known for its popular tourist destinations, including Yousmarg, Nilnag, Doodh Pathri, Tuta Kot, Sangi Safavid, TosMaidan, Nil Veerpal, and Khag.
[2]Tosa Maidan is a beautiful, vast meadow tucked away in the Himalayan Mountains in the Khag tehsil of Budgam district.Tosa Maidan, renowned for its historical significance and scenic beauty, provides tourists with a singular fusin of adventure, cultural legacy, and natural wonders.Located approximately 10 kilometers from Khag and encircled by thick forests, this undiscovered treasure is among Kashmir’s most scenic locations, providing a timeless and enchanted getaway into the natural world. The allure of Tosa Maidan lies not just in its scenic surroundings but also in its intriguing past. Shepherds from surrounding nations as well as those from Kashmir used the meadow in the past as a key pasture. The location served as a major travel route, and it is thought that the Mughals, who frequently traveled through Tosa Maidan on their way to Poonch, built the impressive seven-story structure known as Dam-Dam there.
[3] Yusmarg is a must-visit location for anyone wishing to experience the peace and quiet of Kashmir’s natural beauty because of its undulating meadows and immaculate surroundings, which provide a paradise-like experience. With the magnificent Pir Panjal range serving as a breathtaking backdrop, the vast meadows are ideal for leisurely walks, picnics, and photography. For those looking for a peaceful getaway away from the busy city life, this picturesque setting is the perfect place.
[4] Accessible via the 13,000-foot Basmai Gali pass, Tosa Maidan connects to Poonch Valley through Poonch Gali—historically the safest route to Punjab—and offers trails to Nilnag. Spanning three miles long and 1.5 miles wide, it is the region’s largest alpine meadow. Framed by towering deodar forests, the grassland transforms into a vibrant green carpet in summer. The landscape comes alive with the camps of the Gujjar community and shepherds grazing their flocks, creating an enchanting pastoral scene. Adding to its charm, the intoxicating fragrance of wildflowers permeates the entire valley, enhancing its natural allure.
