Your Divine Destination: Kheer Bhavani Temple
Located just 27 km from Srinagar in the peaceful Ganderbal[2] district[3], the Kheer Bhavani Temple is a sacred haven for Hindu pilgrims, especially Kashmiri Pandits[A]. Dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi[B], the temple’s unique charm lies in its mystical spring and ancient Chinar trees[C]. Legend says the spring’s waters change color – hues of blue or green signify blessings, while darker shades are seen as divine omens. The temple’s name itself stems from the cherished tradition of offering kheer (rice pudding) to the goddess, symbolising deep devotion[4].

[A] Kashmiri Pandits are a community of Kashmiri Hindus, who are indigenous to the Kashmir Valley in India. They are a part of the larger Pancha-Gauda grouping of Brahmins.
[B] Goddess Ragnya Devi, also known as Kheer Bhawani, is a Hindu goddess revered, particularly by Kashmiri Pandits, and is considered an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulmulla, Kashmir, is dedicated to her and is built over a sacred spring believed to change colors. Kheer, a milk and rice pudding, is the main offering to the goddess, giving the temple its name.
[C] Chinar trees characteristically grow in Western Himalayas. Their botanical name is Platanus orientalis. They have been an important part of Kashmiri tradition, in that, a Chinar tree is found in almost every village in Kashmir. These trees have survived for ages, because Chinar is basically a long-living tree.
